Some people say you have to be a multi-millionaire in New York City to get your vegetables. While that sounds exaggerated, we know the epidemic of diabetes in the ghetto, in Harlem. Do we need more supermarkets, it was asked at a forum, including NY Manhattan borough Pres. Scott Stringer.
"We have shown that if we build a consensus and a coalition from the bottom up, and get people the information they need on healthy eating and on how to take back the community after decades and decades of environmental racism, we can truly make a difference," said Stringer, as quoted in the Village Voice.
Frankly, it sounds to me like a stealth attack of the billionaire developers, who need to get their greenie Whole Foods and such into Harlem, in order to attract the rich yuppies and buppies. Note that I have a nearby Dominican bodega store that has green peppers, bananas, plantains, tomatoes, applrd and sometimes lettuce. Ain't that enough? Also, street vendors sell lots of fruits and vegetables on 125th st and other busy areas of Harlem and the Bronx.
WE ACT for Environmental Justice, a greenie developer front group, run with billionaire foundation money, said that the lack of healthy vegetables in Harlem and elsewhere is: "Classism, free markets, and racism." Translation: Do you have to be a multi-millionaire to eat vegetables more interesting than tomato and lettuce?
The Industrial and Commercial Incentive Program, which has given tax incentives since 1976 to gas stations, chain stores and fast-food restaurants that open above 96th Street is seen by many as the culprit for spreading the "Supersize Me" and fat subculture in the ghetto.
