Bronx Student Talent at Haven Gallery
Friday evening, May 16th was the opening of a lovely Student Art exhibition at the Haven Gallery, 50 Bruckner Blvd., in the Bruckner Arts District, near Alexander Ave., Bronx. Student artists came from seven schools including Millennium Art Academy, and the Bronx High School of Visual Arts in the Bronx and Irvington HS in Westchester, NY. The exhibit was celebrated with a two-piece classical music ensemble playing Mozart pieces and other music.
Many of the artists were at the gallery to celebrate the display of their work. Mitch Motush, a High School student from Irvington HK had on display a model of a human hand, made out of cans, glass and paint, in a modern sculpture using recycled materials. The hand was mounted on a stand-alone exhibit stand, given it a feeling of reaching out to viewers. Another student enjoying the exhibition of her work with friends was Jazmine Hayes. Jazmine goes to school at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts, which is in Downtown Brooklyn near the Atlantic Ave. Mall. Her painting is called “Anger” and shows an angry young black woman, with her white teeth flashing out. It has a transparent watercolor type feel to it, though it is done in acrylics. Jazmine enjoys painting and expressing her feelings in this way. She says that teenagers go through a lot of emotions such as anger, that are difficult to express, and art helps her express herself better.
