Bronx Hip Hop Smash- High Water Records

A High Water hip hop showcase on First Friday, Bronx Museum. It was produced by Asho Production, run by Ariel Fernandez. Acts included AOK Collective, hear and see the samples on my space, Fresh Daily, P.Casso, 2Hungry Bros, Homeboy Sandman, 8thWi and Nola Darling. In Hip Hop, a musical line with a singer singing a refrain is in the background, and a rapper raps to the music. High Water Music shows that nice melodic lines can be composed for hip hop, without recycling oldies, which can be fun, but is overdone.
Sadat X did his number called “This is Your Life” that has a melodic background track sung by female singers. He raps, warning people who think that their lives are insulated and that they are protected, to “see that man with the shopping cart that could be you.”
Most of the lyrics are about partying or personal experiences, though some lyrics have social and political overtones. Fresh Daily, a hip hop artist, raps that he’s “trying to get over,” just to “get pass the past.” Many young people from this genre have had troubled pasts or their friends have, and they are trying to get over family problems or criminal problems. Other raps are more fun or even silly. P.Casso raps that he’s been “drinking a lot, and thinking a lot.” In all, there was lots of fun and excitement, and it’s great that this type of show can be had in the Bronx, for free.
