The Point Community Organization had a great event for Black History Month, on Feb. 13th, Friday evening. The audience of about 100 young people had a chance to be educated and entertained at “the Edge” theatre. Idriss showed a short video on the heroes of Black History. The film opens with Martin Luther King giving his speech at the Civil Rights March of 1963, the “I Have a Dream” speech. The film then flashes forward to President Barack Obama saying, that we must put an end to “the slander that a black youth with a book is acting white.”
The film goes to photos of the black intellectual, Mr. W.E.B DuBois, author of the Soul of Black Folks, and a founder of the NAACP. Later, DuBois was put on trial in a political case and spent his last years in the African nation of Ghana. Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth are shown, involved in the Civil War and the struggle against slavery. the film ends with a picture of President Obama and hope of continued achievements.
People also came to the event to have fun. Idriss introduced the musician and singer, Mr. Novel RedWine, from the Bronx who sang a sweet song for Valentine’s Day, directed to the ladies in the audience. The song is named “I Didn’t Mean It” and Novel sang accompanying himself on the electric piano.
This program was made possible by the Point Community Development Corporation, 940 Garrison Ave., Bronx, NY.
