Artists at the Bronx Museum

After these extravagant 3-dimensional and moving art works, it was a nice change of pace to see some more traditional paintings. Giuseppe Luciani’s work is paintings of views of backyards, trees, and houses outside the window of his studio entitled “Brooklyn View.” Mr. Luciani characterizes his paintings as early modernistic style, like the painter Van Gogh. A funny, whimsical work is called “Cups with Hair,” by the artist Sa’adia Rahman, subtitled “I think we met before.” Pencil lines and pasted hair strands are on a white sheet of vellum that is hanging from the ceiling. Below is a small table with cups on it and large pieces of black hair. Perhaps it was left there by two ladies having tea?

The goal of the Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) exhibit is to give new artists an opportunity to display their art in a gallery setting, and increase their visibility. There are other futuristic works of art on display. A missile hangs from the ceiling, over 5-feet long, and is made of clear plastic sheets. There is a bicycle, with 2 wheels on the back that is attached to a large wooden cart. Entitled “A Moving Picture Show,” the bicycle cart also has an old movie projector and a number of repair tools in its wire basket. In fact, there are a number of loose objects on the cart, including pencils, and it’s hard to resist the urge to grab a pencil or other loose objects on the contraption. This work is by Emcee C.M., Master of None, and is a collaborative work.
